NOVI >> Both teams planned on blitzing the other, right out of the gate.

Farmington Hills Mercy’s pregame planning just worked a little better than Macomb Lutheran North’s did, as the Marlins got out to an early double-digit lead, and rolled on to a 54-28 win in Wednesday’s Catholic League A-B semifinal.

FARMINGTON HILLS — There was a certain bit of revenge sought in this one.

Roughly a month after the Dearborn Divine Child girls basketball team handed Farmington Hills Mercy its only league loss of the year, the teams met for a second time Jan. 26.

There would be no repeat performance.

DEARBORN — Entering Thursday night’s road battle at Dearborn Divine Child, the Farmington Hills Mercy basketball team had a single blemish on its Catholic League Central Division record.

Fittingly enough, it came at the hands of the Falcons back on Dec. 21.

Leaving the Divine Child gym this night, the Marlins’ single blemish remained.

FARMINGTON HILLS — The thing about defense is — yes, it can win championships — but it has a hard time winning basketball games single-handedly.

You still have to put the ball in the bucket occasionally to do that.

Farmington Hills Mercy did that with just a touch more frequency in Tuesday’s Catholic League defensive grudge match against rival Birmingham Marian, winning essentially on the strength of three made 3-pointers, 33-30.

FARMINGTON HILLS — A number of Mercy High School students sported red and white polka dot bandanas and blue-collar work shirts rolled up to the elbows.

The team of students embodied Rosie the Riveter, and they wore a picture of the powerhouse on their collars to boot Dec. 16 at the school.

The Mercy High School robotics team has a new home.

School officials cut the ribbon recently on the new robotics room, which will house equipment and materials, as well as supporting all activities for the robotics team, the Riveters.

The new digs make robotics a more feasible option for Mercy students and, as an added benefit, contribute to STEM activities at the school.
