Giant Step Teen Conference
Mercy students attended the Giant Step Teen Conference on October 25, 2022, at Wayne State University. Giant Step brings teenagers together from diverse backgrounds to discover all their common issues. About 300 ninth and tenth graders are recruited across metro Detroit from charter, public, private, parochial, and home schools. The goal is to represent every race, ethnicity, cultural, geographic, and economic background. Trained facilitators lead icebreakers and discussions to help the teens break down superficial barriers and reveal their commonalities. Four hours later, strangers leave as friends. Shaila Cranson, Kennedy Howard, Amari Nwamba, Kate Guerin, McKenzie Thomas, Ava Prempeh, and Bradleigh Hill learned with students from all over metro Detroit. Also, fun fact - Mercy Alumna and CBS News Detroit Executive Producer of Community Impact Amyre Makupson '00 was the keynote speaker!
