When everything seemed to be going South Lyon’s way, Farmington Hills Mercy managed to steal the momentum and win a Class A regional volleyball match Tuesday night.
The Lions won the fourth game, 25-21, and tied the match at two sets apiece with an awesome display of hitting, but the Marlins rebounded to win the decisive fifth set, 15-7.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — Farmington Hills Mercy coach Loretta Vogel admitted she was nervous all day ahead of her team’s appearance in a Class A district final on Thursday.
There was little worry on the Marlins’ bench, however, even after dropping the first set to Farmington Hills Harrison, 25-21. Mercy made an effective defensive switch to contain the Hawks’ top hitters and win the next three sets, 25-18, 25-15, 25-19, for a four-game victory.

A year ago, he bid farewell to one of his most successful senior classes ever.

Mercy makes state golf cut
Mercy High School finished third in a Division 1 regional tournament Thursday and qualified for the state final in girls golf.
Troy won the team title at Twin Lakes Golf Course with 309 strokes. Bloomfield Hills was two ahead of Mercy, 327-329.
Senior Julia Shaw led the Marlins with a fourth-place score of 75.

Mercy’s Conn wins O&E contest
Mercy High School senior Ellyse Conn is the Observer & Eccentric’s Athlete of the Week for Sept. 28-Oct. 4.
Conn won the contest with 10,437 votes and by more than 5,000 over Birmingham Groves football player Nate Highley, who was second with 5,384.
