The Fall 2019 high school sailing season is upon us. This is a big year for the team and we have lots planned.
First, our team kick-off meeting is at Mercy High School on Tuesday, September 3 at 6pm in the school cafeteria. A separate meeting invite should already be in your inbox.
Second, training at Pontiac Yacht Club (PYC) begins next week, September 5, 4-7pm and continues every M, T, Tr for the duration of the season. If you haven't done so, you will need to complete the PYC registration form and pay the $550 training fee to them.
Mercy students will also need to make sure they have complete their registration on PRIVIT.
Third, here is a link to the Fall 2019 season schedule. As always, participation in regattas is optional and does usually entail an extra fee for registration and sometimes travel.
September 14-15 we have both the Women's Great Lakes Championships in Grosse Pointe (this is the qualifier for Women's Nationals) and the PYC T3 regatta. Everyone on the team is expected to attend one or the other - even if you are new.
As a warm up, some students are traveling to Chicago for the Sheridan Shores Kickoff regatta on Lake Michigan September 7-8. This is really a tune-up for the girls to practice on the big lake against some of the same competition they will see a week later. However, everyone is invited, but we need to plan ahead so let me know if you are interested.
We'll cover all this in more detail at the meeting, but I also want to announce that the team is now open to 7th and 8th graders in the UDJ academy. They won't be able to compete in Tier 1 and 2 high school events, but they can race in many T3 events and obviously attend all training at PYC.
Finally, kids can still join the team. Dr.Frikker at PYC and I have been working to expand accessibility for all students. So she asked me to remind everyone that the Pontiac Sailing Education Foundation does provide tuition assistance and subsidized prices on rental gear to ensure money is not a limiting factor to a student's participation. Per usual, if anyone has questions or wants to learn more, they can reach out to me or visit www.mudjsailing.org
See you Tuesday and enjoy your Labor Day!
