Monthly Letter
January 30, 2020
Dear Mercy Parents/Guardians,
Happy Catholic Schools Week! Catholic schools provide religious and moral foundation, in a safe and caring environment that excels at offering academic excellence. Our faith based education supports and develops the “whole young woman.” Throughout the week we celebrate Catholic education and we celebrate the support we receive from you. Thank you for choosing Catholic education for your daughter. Most specifically, thank you for choosing Mercy!
We are very humbled by the thoughtfulness and generosity of our Mercy families who treated staff to a hot chocolate bar on Monday and a Mediterranean lunch on Wednesday for Catholic Schools Week Staff Appreciation Day. We are blessed to be supported by such a caring community.
Open House
This evening, January 30th is Mercy Open House! Do you know a family that would benefit from all that Mercy has to offer? Help spread the word that a Mercy education is a faith based education exemplifying academic excellence with award winning programs in journalism, visual and performing arts, exemplary technology and student mentoring models, opportunities for extra-curricular faith formation, athletic championship titles, a sisterhood that supports social and character development, and so much more. Please share information about our Open House and Shadow Day opportunities!
There is so much excitement around the school with the addition of our new Marlin Shop, Catherine McAuley Tea Parlor and MZone lower level athletic facility. They will be viewable tonight during Open House! Additional availability, pictures and use of these spaces will be posted soon.
Catholic Happenings
March for Life: 39 Mercy students traveled to Washington DC to participate in this year’s March for Life, joining over 3,000 students (and over half a million people overall) from across the nation. Facilitating the trip and accompanying our students were staff members Mrs. Lauren Marquard, Mrs. Hallie Smith, Dr. Kristine Daley and Mrs. Missy Kreucher. New this year, participants attended break out sessions with educational components to strengthen their ability to support the Pro-Life message. We thank our Mercy students and staff for sharing their powerful experience with us.
Kudos
Art Department Scholastic Awards: Congratulations to our 19 students from Mercy’s Art Department who won 36 awards in this year’s Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition. We extend special congratulations to seniors Angela Rea and Lili Omilian who had award winning portfolios. Angela’s portfolio earned finalist status and will compete in New York City for talent scholarships.
Several Mercy students won gold keys (first place) and their pieces will also compete in New York for national awards in March. These students are Madeline Briggs, Emma Engquist, Amanda Herdoiza, Madelynn Hetherington, Angle Rea, Isabelle Smith, Faye Storck and Natalia Sultana.
Recipients of silver keys are Peyton Black, Charlotte Brides, Bridget D’Amore, Janay Duncan and Grace Kelley,
Honorable mentions were awarded to Faith Dallo, Lily Hargrave-Thomas, Ava Smith and Saanya Zaidi.
Many students won multiple award status. A complete list of winners, along with the exhibit display schedule and gallery of photos, may be found here.
Art Department Scholastic Teacher Award: Of special note is that Mercy visual arts teacher and department chair, Ms. Susan Smith, was selected as this year’s recipient of the Inspiring Art Teacher Scholastic Award. Students cited Ms. Smith’s commitment to art education and the customized support she dedicates to each student as the reason she was overwhelmingly nominated. Congratulations to Ms. Smith on this well-deserved professional recognition.
