Revised Absence Policy

Published on 01/22/2020

Please see below for notification of Mercy's new absence policy, effective this second semester. Feel free to contact Eleasha Tarplin, Dean of Student Affairs at edtarplin@mhsmi.org, with questions or concerns. All students were emailed this absence policy and the online student handbook code of conduct section will be updated.

ABSENCES: The school views any absence from class as a serious impediment to a student's education. Class attendance will be closely monitored. The Dean of Student Affairs will oversee this process. This process applies to non-school related absences.

Number of Days Absent (per semester) and Action Taken
  • 1 to 4 class or daily absences: No action taken
  • 5 class or daily absences: Email sent to student and parents/guardians
  • 7 class or daily absences: Required student meeting with Dean of Student Affairs
  • 9 class or daily absences: Required parent/guardian meeting with Dean of Student Affairs
  • 10 class or daily absences: Email and letter sent to parents/guardians notifying that student has reached the allotted absences for the semester
  • 11 to 15 class or daily absences: Automatic deduction of 5% from final grade
  • 16 to 20 class or daily absences: Automatic deduction of 10% from final grade
  • 21 or more class or daily absences: Student will receive NCR in each class and must earn credit by repeating the class or taking another similar class.

Mercy's Administration reserves the right to make exceptions to this policy on a case by case basis, see Attendance Appeals. Additional actions taken due to excessive absences may include:
  • Loss of unscheduled time
  • Loss of Senior Privileges
  • Inability to submit missing work and/or make-up missed assessments, which could result in grade or credit loss
