A Theatrical Delight for French Students
30 French students from all levels of French, joined by their families, attended the opening night of the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast at the Fisher Theater in Detroit. This highly anticipated outing brought a treasured French tale to life on stage, creating an evening of enchantment and cultural discovery. Seeing this French story adapted into a dazzling Broadway spectacle allowed students to experience the timeless narrative in a new artistic form, while still recognizing its French literary roots.
The evening also fostered community spirit, as families and students shared in the joy of live theater, extending cultural learning beyond the classroom walls. Many students expressed excitement at comparing the Broadway performance to Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film version, which they will view in class during National French Week.
This experience blends language learning with authentic cultural opportunities. By linking literature, cinema, and live theater, students not only deepen their appreciation of French culture but also gain broader insight into the power of storytelling to transcend generations and borders. Our next theatrical event for our French students and their families will be Phantom of the Opéra in February 2026 at the Detroit Opera House.
