The Farmington Hills Mercy golf team is making big strides late in the season and is planning for a peak performance next week in the Division 1 state tournament.

The Marlins and Livonia Stevenson tied for first place Wednesday in the regional event at Dearborn Country Club with four-player totals of 328.

Lauren Hunter and Jessica Mruzik are the leading hitters on the Mercy High School varsity volleyball team, but they're doing double duty out of necessity these days.

With veteran setter Liz Susitko sidelined with an injury, they're also sharing that role and setting the ball for each other and the team's other hitters.

After being denied a championship celebration a year ago, Farmington Hills Mercy played the role of spoiler and had it this year in the Catholic League girls golf tournament.

The Marlins crushed pre-meet favorite Macomb Lutheran North's hopes for a victory by winning the team title Monday at Edgewood Country Club in Commerce Township.

Like the leaves changing colors every autumn, another Michigan fall tradition is a Farmington Hills Mercy victory in the annual Oakland County girls swimming and diving meet.

The Marlins won their 12th consecutive championship Saturday at Lake Orion High School, outscoring Catholic League rival Bloomfield Hills Marian to win this year's title, 376-289.

Farmington Hills Mercy begins the 2016 season as the state's No. 1-ranked team in Division 1 girls high school swimming and diving. That's nothing new for either the Marlins or new coach Mike Venos, who also coaches the Birmingham Brother Rice boys team.

With new coach Mike Venos taking over for recently retired Shannon Dunworth, Farmington Hills Mercy’s girls swimming team will have a new look this season. But the Marlins will still be formidable. With 11 straight Oakland County titles and a third-place finish at last year’s D1 state meet, Mercy’s resume is intimidating. To be sure, it will take a mighty effort from area teams to topple the Marlins, but a host of teams will try.
