College App Info Meeting

Published on 08/18/2014

Dear Mercy Senior Parents/Guardians,

The Counseling Staff hopes your family has enjoyed the warm weather and the well-deserved break from school. Although summer is a time for your daughter to recharge her batteries for the next school year; we know that many students have begun organizing themselves for the college application process and may have even begun working on aspects of their applications.

There are a number of layers to this process and the Counseling Staff is here to assist you and your daughter as she works to complete each application. To begin, we hope to provide your family with the information needed to successfully navigate through the nuances of the application process. We are holding a mandatory College Application Information Meeting for the senior class on Thursday, August 28th from 8:15 am - 9:20am in Mercy's Auditorium. Parents are invited and strongly encouraged to attend this important informational meeting. The meeting is designed to walk students through the "How To's" of completing their applications. The meeting will also speak to the procedures students must follow in order to make application requests from Mercy's counselors and teachers.

To supplement this presentation, Counseling will post a series of "How To" videos on the Counseling page of the Mercy's website and on Naviance Family Connection. The videos will provide step-by-step directions for common tasks found in the application process. This will give students and parents 24 hour access to directions for the tasks that students routinely need to complete and often have questions about. Look for the videos to be posted after the college meeting on the 28th.

Finally, we want to provide you and your daughter additional face-to-face opportunities to meet with Counselors to discuss individual college related questions in a casual, relaxed environment. During the month of September we will host "College Thursday" meetings at a designated time (see schedule below). Both students and/or parents are welcome to drop in and speak with a Counselor in person. This is something new that we are offering this year as we work to provide you with a myriad of ways to access information.

*College Thursday Dates:
Sept. 4th @ 7:15am - 8am
Sept. 11th @ 12pm - 1pm
Sept. 18th @ 3pm - 4pm
Sept. 25th @ 8am - 9am
*location TBD

Below you will see the e-mail communication that was recently sent to your daughter about the upcoming college application information meeting on 8/28.

Best wishes to you and your family. We look forward to the fall season and the opportunities it brings us to work more closely with your daughter.

Sincerely,
The Counseling Staff
Mrs. Dianna Shamus (last names A-G)
Mrs. Arpna Hessler (last names H-O)
Mrs. Kristen Casey (last names P-Z)

Dear Mercy Senior,

It's hard to believe that summer is coming to a close and you will be officially starting your senior year this Tuesday. We hope that you have had an enjoyable and relaxing summer vacation.

Although summer is a time for you to rest and regroup for the next school year; we know that for many of you this summer was spent visiting colleges, reviewing college admission requirements, crafting essays, and beginning to fill out applications.

From our experience, we know and expect that you have and "will have" many questions about the application process and the applications themselves. Therefore, every year we hold a mandatory meeting with “seniors” to address your questions and guide you through how to complete aspects of your applications. This is a very important meeting that gives you the details needed in order to complete your applications correctly.  There are procedures that you must follow in order for you to make application requests from your counselor and any teachers. Such requests include but are not limited to: transcripts, Secondary School Reports, and recommendation requests. It is at this meeting that we will explain these procedures.

Your Senior College Information Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 28th from 8:15am - 9:20am in the Auditorium.

All seniors are expected to attend this meeting. If you are unscheduled for 1st hour (Day 2) on the 28th, please plan your schedules accordingly in order to arrive to school by 8:10am.  Your parents will also be invited to attend this presentation.

Finally, counselors will begin accepting college application requests (ie. request for transcripts, etc.) beginning Tuesday, September 2nd.

We look forward to seeing you soon and working with you this fall.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Shamus, Mrs. Hessler and Mrs. Casey
