The Venerable Catherine McAuley Journey to Canonization
Our own Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, is on a journey to canonization - the process of being named a saint of the Catholic Church! Catherine McAuley was declared Venerable on April 9, 1990 by Pope John Paul II due to her life of heroic virtue and service to the poor, sick, and uneducated.
Being declared a saint is a long, serious and complicated process. Catherine has been named Venerable, signifying that she has progressed through two of the four major steps. Currently Catherine’s cause for canonization is in the middle of step three. A medical miracle - the healing of a baby in 2016 - has been identified, rigorously studied by a Diocesan Tribunal and is now awaiting investigation at the Vatican.
