Mercy High School Performing Arts Presents a Hilarious and Empowering Adaptation of Pride and Prejudice
Mercy High School’s production of Pride and Prejudice delivers a powerful blend of spirited comedy and sharp social commentary, all through a vibrant feminist lens that aligns with the mission of the all-girls school. In Kate Hamill’s witty adaptation, the beloved characters of Austen's world come to life with a new, humorous twist, amplifying the societal absurdities that have persisted through the ages.
Director Shelley Bajorek shares: “At its heart, this production celebrates not only the strong female characters Austen wrote, but also the strength and talents of our students, who bring these roles to life with confidence and flair.”
Instilling confidence in young women is central to Mercy High School's mission, which makes this reflection on gender roles, relationships, and personal agency a crucial story for the community. By placing strong female characters at the forefront, this adaptation serves as an empowering reminder of the importance of self-advocacy and authenticity.

Synopsis
Based on the novel by Jane Austen: "This isn’t your grandmother’s Austen! Bold, surprising, boisterous, and timely, this P&P for a new era explores the absurdities and thrills of finding your perfect (or imperfect) match in life. The outspoken Lizzy Bennet is determined to never marry, despite mounting pressure from society. But can she resist love, especially when that vaguely handsome, mildly amusing, and impossibly aggravating Mr. Darcy keeps popping up at every turn?! Literature’s greatest tale of latent love has never felt so theatrical, or so full of life than it does in this effervescent adaptation. Because what turns us into greater fools…than the high-stakes game of love?"
