Regional Scholastic Art Awards Competition 2019-2020

Congratulations to the 19 students from Mercy’s Art Department who won 36 awards in this year’s Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition.

Special congratulations to seniors Angela Rea and Lili Omilian who had award winning portfolios. Angela’s portfolio made finalist status and will compete in New York City for talent scholarships.

Several Mercy students won gold keys (first place) and their pieces will also compete in New York for national awards in March. These students are: Madeline Briggs (one gold key in drawing), Emma Engquist (one gold key in sculpture), Amanda Herdoiza (one gold key in photography), Madelynn Hetherington (one gold key in photography), Angela Rea (two gold keys for painting and portfolio), Isabelle Smith (one gold key in photography), Faye Storck (two gold keys in photography) and Natalia Sultana (one gold key in photography).

The College for Creative Studies sponsors the Southeastern Michigan Art Region, which, this year, received more than 5,500 individual entries and 195 senior portfolios from students in Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties. Jurors selected 65 portfolios to receive honors and 1100 individual category works to receive gold key, silver key, and honorable mention awards. 15 gold key portfolios were selected from 195 submitted. Angela Rea was one of those fifteen students.

Regional winning entries will be on display in the exhibit at the College for Creative Studies, Walter B. Ford II Building from Monday, February 10th – Friday, March 6th. Hours: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday, noon – 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. The regional ceremony for Oakland County private schools will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. in the Detroit Film Theater of the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Of special note is that Mercy visual arts teacher and department chair, Ms. Susan Smith, was selected as this year’s recipient of the Inspiring Art Teacher Scholastic Award. Students cited Ms. Smith’s commitment to art education and the customized support she dedicates to each student as the reason she was overwhelmingly nominated. Congratulations to Ms. Smith on this well-deserved professional recognition.
