Sophomore Mia Flynn was Farmington Hills Mercy’s top athlete in the Catholic League A-B Division girls track and field championship meet Tuesday at Catholic Central High School.
Flynn won two events, running 16.16 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and jumping 16 feet, 2 inches in the long jump.
“It’s consistent with what she has been doing this year in the bigger meets,” Mercy coach Gary Servais said. “She’s won some big meets in the hurdles and is the regional champion in the long jump.
“Setting a school record twice in one week (in the long jump) is a pretty good performance right there.”
Flynn was more than three inches better than Divine Child’s Shannon Rice in the long jump and easily won the hurdles over Warren Regina’s Tracy Suchyta, who ran 17.34.
Mercy did well in the discus, taking four of the eight places. April Seilo was second (102-0), Indya Hood fourth (91-6), Bennie Booker fifth (87-0) and Alma Owhor eighth (79-4).
Booker also was fourth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 32-13/4.
The Marlins scored points in the sprints, too. Hannah Blakey was third in both dash events, running 12.80 in the 100 meters and 26.33 in the 200.
Hallie Buckner was fourth (13.51) and sixth (28.41), respectively. L’oren Carter placed sixth in the 100 (13.65) and eighth in the 400 (1:06.85).
Arianna Allman was third in the high jump (4-7) and Jillian Yassay sixth in the 300 hurdles (55.51).
The Marlins were fifth in the sprint relays and sixth in the longer relay races.
Divine Child won the meet by 14 points over Regina, 116-102. Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard scored 89, Mercy 69, Marian 66 and Notre Dame Prep 56.
“We still need a lot of experience,” Servais said, adding the Marlins are a young team with mostly underclassmen. “Hopefully, the people we have this year come back and we get some more help from new kids.”
