Mercy High School softball standout Abby Krzywiecki is a finalist for the Detroit Athletic Club’s High School Female Athlete of the Year Award.
The senior first baseman is one of six girls to be named as one of the finalists for the award. Six boys were selected, too.
The winners will be announced at a dinner honoring the 12 finalists Monday, May 9, at the Detroit Athletic Club.
More than 100 athletes throughout the state were nominated. All of the finalists will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and the two overall winners will each earn a $5,000 scholarship.
The selection process and the award are based on athletics, academics and community service.
In her first three seasons at Mercy, Krzywiecki had a .510 batting average, 144 RBIs, 150 hits, 28 home runs and a pitching record of 39-4.
For the No. 2-ranked Marlins this year, Krzywiecki is hitting .485 with a team-best six home runs and 30 RBIs. She is second in runs scored with 21.
As a pitcher, she is 3-1 with a 1.48 earned run average, 25 strikeouts and only four walks.
Krzywiecki has a softball scholarship to the University of South Alabama, a perennial top-20 team in the NCAA Division I rankings.
She also considered Notre Dame, Michigan State and Utah.
