Will the Detroit Athletic Club’s 20th annual female Michigan High School Athlete of the Year award stay in Oakland County?
It could.
Farmington Hills Mercy senior Abby Krzywiecki is one of six finalists for this year’s award it was recently announced.
The winner — who receives a $5,000 scholarship, while the other five finalists get $1,000 each — will be unveiled on May 9.
Birmingham Seaholm’s Audrey Belf won the 2015 award, while Cranbrook Kingswood’s Alexandria Najarian won it in 2014, Country Day’s Kendall Baisden in 2013 and Stoney Creek’s Gabby Yurik in 2012.
The last time a player from outside Oakland County won the award was in 2011, when Hudsonville’s Sara Driesenga claimed it.
Farmington’s Maddie Trevisan (cross country/track) is the other local female finalist, while Birmingham Brother Rice baseball star Karl Kauffmann is one of the six male finalists.
The other female finalists include: Miss Basketball Kysre Gondrezick of Benton Harbor, Macomb Dakota’s Kayla Dobies (track/cross country), Arbor Skyline’s Kathryn Portz (swimming) and Romeo’s Giovanna Milano.
Kryzwiecki was named first-team all-state in Division 1 by the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association as a junior, and has a career batting average of .510 with 28 home runs.
