Oakland County champs crowned in girls swimming

The best of the best in Oakland County swimming converged Oct. 5 in the pool at Waterford Mott for the county swim and dive championship.

Farmington Hills Mercy turned in a dominating performance, finishing with 438 points; Lake Orion High was second with 244.

Bloomfield Hills Marian finished third with 196, Birmingham Seaholm took fourth with 177 and Rochester Adams rounded out the top five with 173.

The rest of the field consisted of Clarkston High (166), Waterford United (133), White Lake-Lakeland (120), South Lyon High (102), Birmingham Groves (88), North Farmington (87), Bloomfield Hills High (79), Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood (67), Farmington Hills Harrison (62), Troy High (50), Walled Lake Northern (32), Novi High (30), West Bloomfield High (21), Walled Lake Central (20), Rochester High (14), Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (12), Royal Oak High (7), Berkley High (5), Milford High (2), Troy Athens (0), Madison Heights Bishop Foley (0) and Madison Heights Lamphere (0).

Mercy owned all of the relay races.

The Marlins opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 49.1 seconds.

Mercy later took the 200-freestyle relay in 1:36.63 and the 400-freestyle relay in 3:33.31

Marian’s Mollie Pulte was tops in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:49.39. Waterford’s Maddie Wright came in second with 1:52.23 and Lake Orion’s Kirstyn Abbasse’s time of 1:53.84 was good for third.

In the 200 individual medley, Waterford’s Miranda Tucker came in first after posting 2:03.15. Mercy’s Maddy Loniewski was second, coming in at 2:05.71, and her teammate, Katie Minnich, was third after a time of 2:09.2.

Mercy’s Roxanne Griffore proved to be the fastest in the 50 free, finishing in 23.87. Bloomfield Hills’ Doey McGowan was second in 24.62, and Clarkston’s CJ Hughes finished third with a time of 24.73.

On the 1-meter diving board, Walled Lake Central’s Amanda Ling was tops with a score of 436. South Lyon owned the next two spots with Heidi Surdyk scoring 417.55 and Madison Canadi posting 400.25.

After finishing second in the 200 free, Wright won the 100 butterfly in 55.97. Lake Orion’s Sarah Hennings finished second in 56.39, and Mercy’s Ellyse Conn was third in 57.22.

Pulte won her second event of the day in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 50.95. Griffore was second in 52.58 and Troy’s Michelle Wang touched the wall in 53.66 for third.

Conner won the 500 freestyle in 4:56.77. Her classmate at Mercy, Kathleen McGee, was third after finishing in 5:06.42, and North Farmington’s Emma Bradley was second in 5:02.95.

In the 100 backstroke, Minnich was tops with a time of 56.55. Her teammate at Mercy, Alaina Skellett, finished third in 57.88. Seaholm’s Mykala Arnold was second in 57.22.

Tucker took the 100 breaststroke in dominating fashion, finishing in 1:02.24. Lake Orion’s Lydia Mattar was second in 1:06.68, and Loniewski was third, touching the wall in 1:06.8.
