2026 Garn Griffin Athletic Award

The Garn Griffin Athletic Award, named in honor of the beloved Garn Griffin, is a tribute to his unwavering support and love for Mercy High School’s athletic programs. Garn’s dedication, passion for sports, and commitment to our school left an indelible mark on our community, and it is a true honor to continue his legacy through this award. The Garn Griffin Athletic Award recognizes an outstanding athlete who has excelled not only in athletics, but also in academics, leadership, and sportsmanship. The recipient of this award is someone whose achievements on the court are matched by their character, humility, and commitment to Mercy’s Mission and Values.

Ella Andrews

Ella distinguished herself as one of the premier volleyball players in the nation while representing Mercy High School with excellence, integrity, and humility both on and off the court. She has continued her academic and athletic career at Stanford University.

During her remarkable career at Mercy, she earned recognition as a two-time All-American, two-time All-State honoree, two-time All-Region selection, and two-time All-Catholic athlete. She was also nominated for Miss Volleyball and played a key role in leading Mercy to two MHSAA State Championships.

Beyond her impressive list of accomplishments, Ella Andrews made a lasting impact on the Mercy community through her leadership, work ethic, sportsmanship, and dedication to her teammates. She consistently embodied the values of Mercy Athletics, demonstrating grace in both victory and adversity while serving as a positive role model for those around her.

In recognition of her extraordinary achievements and the example she has set for future Marlins, Mercy High School proudly presented the Garn Griffin Athletic Award to Ella Andrews.

Nora Gerzema

Nora established herself as one of the premier distance runners in the state of Michigan while serving as an exceptional leader within Mercy Athletics. A multiple-time team captain, she consistently led by example through her determination, humility, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to her teammates. She will continue her academic and athletic career competing in Track & Field at Purdue University.

Throughout her outstanding career, Nora achieved success at every level of competition in both Cross Country and Track & Field. In Cross Country, she earned recognition as a three-time State Qualifier, two-time All Catholic honoree, and three-time All County selection.

Her accomplishments in Track & Field were equally impressive. Nora qualified for the state meet in five different events across multiple seasons and earned Regional Championships in both the 800 Meter Run and the 4x800 Relay. She was also named CHSL Champion in the 1600 Meter Run and helped lead Mercy to a CHSL Championship in the 4x800 Relay.

In addition, Nora earned numerous All Catholic honors in the 800 Meter Run, 1600 Meter Run, 4x400 Relay, and 4x800 Relay.

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Nora made a lasting impact through her leadership, resilience, and passion for Mercy Athletics. She has been the heartbeat of her teams — a fierce competitor who continually challenged herself while encouraging and uplifting those around her. Her dedication and example have left a meaningful legacy within the Mercy community.

Nora truly embodies the values of the Garn Griffin Athletic Award through her excellence, sportsmanship, leadership, and commitment to something greater than herself.
