Jasmine Joseph ’26 is extending her passion for the arts beyond the classroom as a member of the Detroit Institute of Arts Teen Council (DIATC), a select group of students who help design and lead programs for teens across metro Detroit.
Focused on community building, social justice, and culture, the Teen Council partners with museum staff to create meaningful opportunities for young people to engage with art. Members gain leadership experience while exploring artistic expression and careers in the arts.
Jasmine first discovered the program after attending a Teen Council event where she did an oil pastel drawing, toured an exhibit, and had dinner. Initially drawn by a desire to spend more time at the museum, she also saw the opportunity as a way to grow build confidence and leadership skills.
As a council member, she collaborates with peers to plan and lead events inspired by museum exhibits and help create activities and presentations.
Through her work with the DIA Teen Council, Jasmine is helping others discover the power of creative expression.
She shares, “My curiosity to experience new forms of art has informed my proposals for events, which have gone past popular mediums like charcoal and paint and into mediums like stained glass and tile art. Though I was on the council before taking AP Art, I feel like both experiences have impacted each other. The mediums I see in the museum, like mosaics and art that mixes 2D and 3D, have given me inspiration for AP Art pieces, while the ideas I have for art pieces and the openness between my classmates have helped me with ideas and collaboration at the council.”
