On April 9, the French II students of Mme Campbell, accompanied by chaperone Mrs. Cheryl Corte, former Mercy Media Specialist, experienced an inspiring day at the Detroit Institute of Arts. In preparation for the trip, each student selected a French Impressionist painter and engaged in an in-depth classroom research project, exploring the lives and techniques of masters such as Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Pissarro, Rousseau, Cassatt, Morisot, and Van Gogh. Their studies came to life during a docent-led tour of the museum’s renowned Impressionist galleries, where students had the unique opportunity to see original masterpieces up close. After lunch, students worked in pairs to complete a French-themed scavenger hunt created by Mme Campbell, reinforcing their learning through interactive discovery as they explored additional French collections throughout the museum.
A special highlight of the afternoon was a visit to the bold and immersive exhibit “7 Mile and Livernois” by acclaimed artist and Mercy alumna Tiff Massey '00. Students were captivated by her vibrant, large-scale work celebrating Black culture and community, and were especially proud to know that such a powerful creative voice once walked the same Mercy halls they do now. The day offered both inspiration and immersion, leaving students with a deeper appreciation for French art, local artistry, and its lasting impact on the world.
