Latin Program Experiences 2024
On January 11, Mercy Latin students visited the Wayne State University Planetarium. Students attended the "Seven Wonders" presentation, which highlighted the ancient wonders of the world. Students had previously visited three of these wonders (Colossus of Rhodes, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, and Temple of Artemis at Ephesus) over on the annual Latin trip to Italy, Greece, and Turkey. They learned about the Greco-Roman origins of constellations, the mythology behind the zodiac signs, and the solar basis of the Julian calendar, which was created by the ancient Romans and still used today.
Later in the afternoon, students attended a tour of the Detroit Institute of Arts, where they:
- Viewed the iconic Diego Rivera murals in the Great Hall
- Studied the Faiyum mummy portraits of Roman Egypt
- Read and translated Latin throughout the building
- Explored black figure and red figure Greek pottery
- Determined parallels between ancient Meso-American and Greco-Roman beauty ideals
