Meg Mallon and Diane Dietz among those Inducted into Mercy High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame
The 2nd Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony Welcomed Students, Coaches and Alumnae to Collaborate on the Importance of Women in Sports
FARMINGTON HILLS, MICH. – SEPT. 30, 2023 – Eighteen-time LPGA Championship Golfer Meg Mallon and All-American Women’s Basketball Player and Big Ten Deputy Commissioner Diane Dietz have been inducted into Mercy High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame in the school’s 2nd Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony.
Meg Mallon ‘81 won Big Ten All-Conference while on Ohio State’s Golf Team. She won 18 LPGA Tour events including four major championships. She was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 and World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017.
Diane Dietz ’78 is a former All-American Big Ten women’s basketball player. She played for the University of Michigan from 1979 to 1982 and remains No. 4 on the program’s all-time scoring list. Currently, Dietz is deputy commissioner for the Big Ten Conference and a member of the Big Ten Conference senior leadership team. She is embarking on her 14th year at the conference.
“This year’s induction is incredibly special because of the legacy these two great women have left behind for Mercy’s varsity golf and basketball teams,” said Cheryl Kreger, president, Mercy High School. “Our girls work hard to win championships and look up to our alumnae. Ms. Mallon and Ms. Dietz have had a profound impact on women in sports and continue to serve their respective roles with the values that were instilled in them at Mercy such as Principled Leadership and Educational Courage.”
The ceremony began with a heartfelt reunion between Mallon’s former coach Vicky Kowalski, who was recently named Michigan High School Athletic Coach Association (MHSCA) Girls Golf Coach of the Year, and the varsity golf team. Dietz also met with Girls Basketball Coach Gary Morris and a few of the varsity players. Students asked the alumnae questions about their professional career, navigating college sports, and advice to their younger selves.
“As women continue to break barriers in sports, we acknowledge the strides and achievements our alumnae are making all over the world to compete athletically,” said Kreger. “Our athletic department has produced some of the world’s most successful athletes. Our Athletic Hall of Fame was created to recognize their achievements not only after graduation but the contributions they made to Mercy.”
During her time at Mercy, Dietz was a four-year varsity athlete in basketball, volleyball and softball. She led the Marlins to four state finals including an undefeated season and a 1977 Class A Michigan state championship.
While at Mercy, Mallon was on Mercy’s first Golf Team and played basketball and softball.
Dr. Kreger awarded Mallon with the 2023 President's Award for Transformational Leadership for her philanthropic support of Mercy’s Annual Make a Difference Golf Outing and the Meg Mallon Scholarship, an endowment that meets tuition needs of students.
