WEST BLOOMFIELD — Farmington Hills Mercy coach Loretta Vogel admitted she was nervous all day ahead of her team’s appearance in a Class A district final on Thursday.
There was little worry on the Marlins’ bench, however, even after dropping the first set to Farmington Hills Harrison, 25-21. Mercy made an effective defensive switch to contain the Hawks’ top hitters and win the next three sets, 25-18, 25-15, 25-19, for a four-game victory.

FARMINGTON HILLS — So many similarities, yet so much change.
That’s the 2015 Farmington Hills Mercy swim team, according to long-time coach Shannon Dunworth.
A year ago, he bid farewell to one of his most successful senior classes ever.
This fall, he launched into a new era of excitement, and what the Marlins hope is a strong continuation of tradition.

Mercy makes state golf cut
Mercy High School finished third in a Division 1 regional tournament Thursday and qualified for the state final in girls golf.
Troy won the team title at Twin Lakes Golf Course with 309 strokes. Bloomfield Hills was two ahead of Mercy, 327-329.
Senior Julia Shaw led the Marlins with a fourth-place score of 75.

Mercy’s Conn wins O&E contest
Mercy High School senior Ellyse Conn is the Observer & Eccentric’s Athlete of the Week for Sept. 28-Oct. 4.
Conn won the contest with 10,437 votes and by more than 5,000 over Birmingham Groves football player Nate Highley, who was second with 5,384.

Coach Shannon Dunworth and the Farmington Hills Mercy faithful learned a great deal more about the their girls swimming and diving team Saturday.
The Marlins confirmed what many thought to be the case in winning their 11th consecutive year Oakland County championship.
They’re still a formidable program and a perennial power in the sport.
