VISIT THE BLACK CATHOLIC HEROES EXHIBIT
The Black Catholic Heroes Exhibit is now available to view at Mercy High School in the Auditorium/Gym Lobby. This exhibit is a collection of images of Black Catholics painted by students employed by the College for Creative Studies’ Detroit Neighborhood Arts Corps.
In the fall of 2020, Professor Larry Lunsford gathered twelve African American young student artists and asked them to research Black Catholics and paint the sixty-nine portraits on display in this traveling art show to show the depth of our Black Catholic heritage, which is little-known. The ages of the artists range from twelve to young adults. The sixty-nine portraits are not only of those on the road to sainthood, but heroes such as Kobe Bryant, Beyonce, Roberto Clemente, Simone Biles, and Amanda Gorman—all Catholic.
The exhibit will be on display in the auditorium/gym lobby area during the first two weeks of November, which is Black Catholic History Month. People who have viewed it already are in awe and want to bring family and friends back to see it. There is also a booklet included with the exhibit that gives more detailed biographies of each hero. Make sure to come and check it out while it is here!
